However, no one has yet successfully explained the children&＃039;s performance in comprehending tautology, i.e. A is A (≒Japanese A wa A (da) ) . Using Yamamoto&＃039;s (2018) experimental data on Japanese schoolchildren, this paper examines children’s misunderstanding of tautology. I claim that children fail at all of the three steps proposed in Winner&＃039;s (1988) scheme, and the lack of the ability to read another&＃039;s intentions places constraints on tautological comprehension.
