The award recognizes individuals "who shows extraordinary leadership in advancing the cause of near-surface geophysics through long-term, tireless, and enthusiastic support of the near-surface geophysics community" and is administered jointly by The Near-Surface Geophysics Section (NSG) of the SEG and the Environmental and Engineering Geophysical Society (EEGS). Professor Sato was recognized for his global contribution to ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology--especially in the development of an advanced borehole radar technology and landslide monitoring through ground-based synthetic aperture radars (GB-SAR), and his various contributions in landmine detection and the search for tsunami victims.
