For examples, we are engaged in the study on quantification and visualization of the electromagnetic field noise in integrated circuits and printed circuit boards. We also study the analog (Mixed-Signal) integrated circuits and the advanced functional imaging device, based on CMOS imaging technology. For non-visible light imaging from Gamma-ray to far infrared, the advanced imaging devices and functional electron sources are also developed. Our division focuses on fundamental research and development of electronic, photonic and thermo-electronic devices whose advanced functionalities are needed for the development of novel imaging technologies pursued at the Research Institute of Electronics (RIE). For example, we are engaged in development of i) extremely low power-consuming semiconductor nanostructures enabling control and manipulation of single-electron and single-photon states, ii) solid-state atomic devices based on exploitation of characteristics of single dopant atoms in silicon, (iii) fabrication of photonic crystals and other periodically micro/nano-structured materials by laser lithography, (iv) high efficiency thermoelectric conversion devices, and (v) devices for high-efficiency photoenergy conversion assisted by metallic micro-/nano-structures. Device fabrication and characterization are carried out at RIE using state-of-the-art cleanroom facility, and research laboratories. We have been synthesizing various nanoceramics, thin films, hybrid nanoparticles and recently developed new functional materials by controlling their nanostructure, crystal structure, band structure and so on. We also have been working on the development of energy-related materials (thermoelectric, photovoltaic and thermo-photovoltaic materials). In addition, our groups have been working on the preparation of light emitting materials and their applications for novel light sources and displays. Moreover, we have been developing new imaging methods to investigate bionanomaterials such as biomembranes and proteins, and also their assemblies such as cells, and then revealing elementary processes of functions and dynamics of these bionanomaterials. Based on these results, we have been elucidating design principles of living systems. Our division focuses on fundamental research and development of new measurement and/or processing devices in electronics, photonics, mechatronics and nano-science fields. For example, we are engaged in development of i) scanning electron microscope which is applicable in cell measurement, ii) solid-state atomic devices based on exploitation of characteristics of single dopant atoms in silicon, (iii) fabrication of photonic crystals and other periodically micro/nano-structured materials by laser lithography, (iv) high efficiency thermoelectric conversion devices, and (v) devices for high-efficiency photoenergy conversion assisted by metallic micro-/nano-structures.
